What is it?


Designed by Hunter Joslin, an avid user of balance boards since 1965.
The INDO BOARD balance trainer is simple, stable and user friendly. Anybody can ride with a few basic instructions and something to hold onto initially. Learning curve is a mere 10 to 15 minutes for most. After that, Indoboarding becomes routinely easy and fun.

The product’s simplicity has enabled it to become a trully multifunctional fitness tool. Most importantly,once again it’s FUN!

The INDO BOARD balance trainer has been designed to appeal to everyone, ages 4 to whatever. The large surface area provides maximum stability while the INDO rider uses their sense of balance to maneuver the board over the roller in a controlled manner.

Whatever your motivation for using the Indo Board, the end result is the same; increased core strength, leg strength and balance coordination. Its versatility makes the Indo Board a great cross training tool for a variety of sports; from extreme boardsports, to all mainstream sports that require agility and innate balance coordination.

The Aim

To exercise core muscles to improve balance, which is important in all aspects of life and essential in the simple task of standing upright and walking.
In this age of fitness awareness, the notion of balance training should be essential (especially in board sports). Yet, this is a new area of sports fitness.
Keeping the board from touching the ground for extended rides is the goal and challenge.

Surf Roots of Indo Board

I started surfing in 1965. Surfing was the new fad and all my friends were taking up the sport. Unfortunately, I was on a swimming team, which required me to spend all my after school hours in the pool training. This wasn't helping me learn the intricacies and balance points of riding a surfboard, even though I could certainly out-paddle all my friends. One day I discovered a homemade balance board that was forgotten in a storage room at the swimming pool. I looked at it and immediately tried to hang ten on it. The board shot out from under my feet and I landed hard, flat on my back. However, that brief instant before I fell gave me the feeling of hanging out on the end of a surfboard. Undeterred, I took it home and dedicated myself to mastering the device.


My interest in surfing gave me reason to explore beyond the conventional use of the balance board. Once I had the basic stance mastered (standing sideways with one foot on each end), I changed my approach to the device and started learning how to walk on the board from end to end. The action of the board moving back and forth on the roller was a totally similar sensation to riding a surfboard. It was FUN and I could do it for hours at a time. As a result of this practice, I advanced much quicker than my friends in surfing abilities.

Surfing has forever suffered from the lack of repetitive training while in the water. Riding the Indo Board, first and foremost IS FUN! The bonus is that it will strengthen your legs and improve your surfing after just using it a few times.


If you are serious about cross training for surfing, then the Indo Board is the ideal device to keep you tuned when you are not in the water. The Indo Board works for ALL surfers, whether you ride a shortboard or a longboard .Leg strength is the most overlooked physical necessity of all surfers. Improve your leg strength and your surfing will improve guaranteed!

Getting Started

How to start INDOing:

The best way to begin bringing the balance board off the floor into balance on the roller is to have a partner spot you, or place the board close to a wall or railing that you can hold onto. DO NOT TRY IT BY YOURSELF AS A BEGINNER!

The board, when it is balanced, is referred to as "IN TRIM”. As you progress in your ability, you will find that being in trim can be accomplished in many different positions. For more info, see Universal Training.

Precautions


The INDO BOARD balance trainer is best used on a carpeted surface .The thicker the carpet pile the slower the action will be. As you become more proficient in using the INDO BOARD, bare floors can provide the ultimate challenge to your abilities. However, the action is greatly speeded up and falls are quite unforgiving.

People riding the INDO BOARD for the first time should never do it without some way to steady themselves! Practice up close to a wall or holding someone's hands. Always BEND YOUR KNEES and don't lean on the steady support.

It is highly recommended that safety gear be worn to help soften the inevitable falls. Wrist guards are the best protection, along with helmet, knee and elbow pads.
Most surfers prefer to go barefoot, because that's how they surf. Skateboarders always wear shoes and wake boarders go both ways!

It's up to the rider to determine if shoes are right for them.
Make sure the area where you are riding is clear of objects that you might fall on.
Keep spectators at a reasonable distance away from the rider and the path of a flying INDO BOARD. The board can become a missile and cause injury if it hits someone.
Alcohol slows the reaction time and is not to be mixed with INDO BOARD riding.
INDO BOARDS have a hollow roller and if the action is too fast you can cut a hole in the sticker to add sand (approx. 2-3 cups) to help slow the action for beginners or in the absence of carpet.
Take these few simple precautions and let the INDO obsession begin!
